Forest Landscape near a Pond
(5000-2070)

This unusually large landscape drawing by Appian represents one of his favorite themes in drawings: a forest with a little river in the foreground, a little boat tied up on its bank, two figures, a man and a woman, as its focal point, and the rich forest trees as a backdrop.

Charcoal and powdered charcoal with stumping, scratching, with red chalk and off-white opaque watercolor on tan-colored wove paper; scratching, stumping, lifting, and dry brush (1853)

by Adolphe Appian (French, 1818-1898)
