Cornelis Troost built his reputation on delightful depictions of everyday life. This drawing captures a poignant moment during a celebration of the feast of Saint Nicholas ( Sinterklaas ), a Dutch holiday. Troost depicted a displeased boy who receives switches in his shoes instead of gifts and candy.
